BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN SIGNED 1967 FREEHOLD HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK

brucebruce2

Rare and extremely desirable Bruce Springsteen signed high school yearbook. The 1967 Freehold New Jersey Regional High School yearbook, titled The Log, features aspiring artist and graduating senior Bruce Springsteen in the era and context that inspired him and shaped much of his creative powers in the years to come. Springsteen has inscribed and signed the book in blue ink above his yearbook picture, “Anielia, Best of luck in the coming years and always remember Mr. Hussey’s English class. Have fun this summer, Bruce.” Both the inscription and signature are printed and grade “10.” Springsteen is pictured only once in the book and it appears obvious, by the brief educational summary printed below his name “”Freehold Boro…College Prep”), that his academic pursuits had already taken a back seat to his musical ambitions. At the time of his graduation, Springsteen was performing as the lead guitarist and singer for a local band call “The Castilles.” His career quickly blossomed and just seven years later, following a performance of Springsteen and the E Street Band in Cambridge, Massachusetts, music critic Jon Landau, wrote “I saw my rock and roll past flash before my eyes. I saw something else: I saw rock and roll’s future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” (Landau would later become Springsteen’s manager and producer.) The 308-page (including eight-page insert) leather-bound book (8 x 10.75 inches features numerous inscriptions to “Aniela” throughout and displays light wear from normal handling. Overall in Excellent
Condition!

CARL PERKINS BLUE SUEDE SHOES HANDWRITTEN LYRICS
CARL PERKINS BLUE SUEDE SHOES HANDWRITTEN LYRICS

With his smash 1956 hit classic “Blue Suede Shoes,” Carl Perkins virtually defined and established rockabilly music in the rock and roll cannon and launched Sun Records into national prominence. Carl Perkins is regarded by many as one of the founding fathers of rock-and-roll. Although he placed only one record in the pop top forty “Blue Suede Shoes,” it became a legendary one in the annals of rock-and-roll and propelled Perkins, one of the original rockabilly singers, into his legendary status.

Born Carl Lee Perkins near Tiptonville, Tennessee in 1932, the son of the only white sharecropper (Fonie “Buck” Perkings)on a cotton plantation and Louise Brantley. The family lived first in a three room shack and then a one room storehouse. The family was so poor that kids in the neighborhood  brought cast off clothes for the Perkins brothers. perkinperform.jpg (60540 bytes)perkinsyoung.jpg (43583 bytes)

Growing up in Tennessee with his brothers, Jay B. and Clayton, Carl learned to play the guitar and became quite proficient at it. He listened to country music, gospel, and blues, and began to write some of his own compositions. At 13 he performed a song that he had written, Movie Magg, at a local talent show and won. He formed a group with Jay and Clayton called the Perkins Brothers. Carl played electric guitar and did most of the singing with Jay playing acoustic rhythm guitar, and Clayton the upright bass.

Shortly after World War II the family moved to Bemis Tennessee, where the brothers worked in the cotton mills. Buck was unable to get a job in the mills because of a lung condition, and Perkins family went back to sharecropping.

THE MEMPHIS MAFIA”

The Memphis Mafia is the nickname given to the group of men who were with Elvis Presley everyday from 1956 until the day he died on August 16, 1977.

There were eight original members; although at times, they numbered between four and thirteen. The core group of original guys (Sonny West, Red West, Billy Smith, Marty Lacker, and Lamar Fike) was considered to be the closest to Elvis and became his confidants throughout the years.

The name “The Memphis Mafia” was bestowed on the group in an unusual way. In the early 1960’s, Elvis and the guys frequently wore black mohair suits. One afternoon in Las Vegas on a two-week pleasure trip, Elvis and the guys went to meet someone at the Riviera Hotel.

Elvis and the guys usually stayed at The Sahara Hotel. Their normal routine for Las Vegas was to stay up all night and sleep during the day. Elvis and the guys normally started their day about 5 p.m. However, on that day, the appointment at the Riviera Hotel was at 1 p.m. Four hours earlier than they normally got up.

There was a crowd of people in front of the Riviera Hotel when the two big black limousines pulled up. Elvis and about ten guys, all wearing black mohair suits and sunglasses, got out of the limousines. Because they normally didn’t get much in the sun during the day, their skins were pale white. It was a scary sight to behold, and someone in the crowd yelled: “Who are they, The Mafia?”

It just so happened that there was a reporter from a Las Vegas newspaper there. So, the next day, a story ran about what she saw. She dubbed them “The Memphis Mafia.” Elvis loved his guys being called that, and the name stuck.

The guys became known throughout the world as “The Memphis Mafia.” Like the real mafia, there was always a code of silence within the group while Elvis was alive. Throughout all the years of his life, they protected Elvis’ name and image.

Now is the first time that this many of the original members of The Memphis Mafia have gotten together to relate to you, the public, what those many years with Elvis Presley were really like. Today, The Memphis Mafia is comprised of the following men:
